Is there such a thing as a 'Quote Item' that could be used for quoting only - not orderable in OM?

We created between 100 and 200 new part numbers a day for use in Quoting our products.  We are a distributor for other suppliers products, so our item master is constantly changing.  Has anybody used a concept of a 'Quoted Item' in OM Quoting, that would prevent us from creating so many items just to create quotes, and then allow the item to be properly setup when the order is actually received?  If so, how did you accomplish?
