Accessing new content in Oracle Encyclopedia via email link

We have created an Alert for new content in Oracle Encyclopedia (MES).  The alert sends an email and contain a URL link to the content (Word document, PDF etc.). We are running into an issue with the link itself. Upon clicking on the link we get an error page indicating that the user does not have the correct ROLE to view the content.  The same user has no problem accessing the content directly in Oracle. Any ideas on what we might be doing wrong with creating the link.
