Upgrading Planning

Hello,

we are in the process of upgrading from Planning/Essbase 11.1.1.3 to 11.1.2.3 and it is my understanding that we need to perform a new install.  We have two virtual machine servers set up, one for foundation services and planning, the other just for Essbase.  This is our dev environment, when we move it to production we will use physical servers.

I installed the products like the standard deployment documents suggest, however when i go to create a data source in planning web it says I cannot connect to Essbase.  So I have a couple of questions:

1 - Are vm's treated differently than physical servers?  i.e. are the roles/features/resources on the servers the same or different?  Which roles should be on the essbase and planning servers?
