Employee Job Title YAJBCX field too short/free form

Employee Job Title YAJBCX is a short, free form field.  Both characteristics cause us pain and I assume are also issues for others.  If so, looking for ideas on what others have done to address these 2 issues, ie; expanded field length and valid value selection.

Any input is appreciated.
