Delivery Manager hung process

I have created some custom JAVA to call the delivery manager api. Last week, I noticed I have 3 hung processes that seem to have got stuck in the call to the delivery manager TYPE_SMTP_EMAIL.  There is no exception written to the log in the catch part of the code.  I am using 10.1.3.4.2  stand alone publisher.  Any ideas on what could have caused the processes to hang?  It hasn't happened since
