Which tnsnames to use?

On a server (Linux OS) there are two verisons of Oracle client installed - 11.2.0 and 11.1.0. Both have tnsnames.ora files. I need to add an entry to connect to the database on a different server. How do I know which tnsnames.ora to add an entry to?
