Customer and Account Number mapping

Hi

I just wanted to get my basics correct.

1. How are customer and account number mapped in EBS ? Is it something like one customer can have multiple account numbers or its the other way round ?

2. If the answer for one of the above scenarios is YES, then why is it required to maintain one-to-many relationship between them in EBS ?
