Essbase admin does not work

I'm having trouble with a recently reconfigured (patched to 11.1.2.3) Essbase environment.  Our admin ID does not appear to be able access Essbase.  We have not changed the password.  We can log into EAS, but when we add and Essbase server it fails

Error: 103: Unexpected Essbase error 1051293
Error: 1051293: Login fails due to invalid login credentials

I tried creating another (native ID) essadmin, but it get a different error

Error: 104: Invalid user name or password
Error: 1051012: User native://nvid=5f9c8be665a69b95:285b7e58:14275d7ea8a:-7b54?USER does not exist
