How can we troubleshoot SmartView error message? Unkown Error in HFMProviderData at the root lev

An Excel spreadsheet with SmartView coding is throwing error message    'Unkown Error in HFMProviderData at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1' .  Where do we start in troubleshooting this issue?  Could this be an error in the way the SmartView cells were coded?  Or is HFM losing its connection to the HFM SQL Server database?
