Restrict Manager View of Reporting Hierarchy in SSHR

I was wondering if somebody out there could point me in the right direction - we'd like to modify the manager view of their reporting hierarchy (supervisor based)  to exclude people who have suspended assignments.

I've done something similar in the past - but it was a long time ago.  Can we simply copy and customise the VO or is their some other file that should be updated?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.
