Default Sales Stage value on Converted Leads

Dear all,
I would just like to ask if it's possible to set a default sales stage value for leads that were converted into an opportunity?
Can it be set using a workflow? Because as I have noticed, there are no identifiers  in an opportunity whether it is converted lead or a newly created opportunity.

I would appreciate your response on this query.
