Is documentation or sql scripts available to estimate metrics for implementing extended column stats

We implemented extended column stats and histogram stats for some tables in our 11.2.0.3 CBO non-RAC database(s).  

We have experienced cpu and elapsed time benefits from 0% to 50% improvement.

We are naturally hesitant to implement this en masse in case there is performance degradation.  But, we would like to determine a way to 
identify and implement this functionality where it may be most beneficial.

Are documentation or scripts available which will help us identify when we may achieve the greatest benefit from implementing this functionality?
