Changing an Asset Category from Independent Segment to Dependent

I have a client that has two independent segments for major and minor categories, they have been live on Oracle R12 for almost 3 years. Most of the categories setup have not been used, but now several more will be used. I am requesting some backups to validate from the forms and do some testing but I am concerned about the potential impact at the table levels for data corruption?
