Casting Indexed fields

Hi,I have a question on casting indexed fields.
On a customers CRMoD I have seen that they use an indexed date/time field, but in report and prompt they cast it as date (to avoid the time part in the prompt).
Now I wonder if this would destroy the performance benefit of the indexed field. I know that there are different concepts for indices, and I have no idea what is used in CRMoD. As far as I remember this could lead to an "calculation" on every value in this column and could prevent the usage of  the index structure.
