Removing the "New Appointment" Button

We prefer our users to enter follow-up reminders as tasks, not appointments.  On records pages such as Accounts and Opportunities, in the section titled Open Call Reports/Tasks, there are two buttons.  One says New Appointment and the other New Task.  Is there a way to remove the New Appointment button or disable it?
