if primary db went down then how the application will access the standby db?

 Hi,
i'm having one doubt in the data guard scenario.

 my primary DB having a JDBC connection of one of the retail application. suddenly my primary db went down or crashed.
 with the help of standby db we can recover the DB but how the application will access the db? , how the application will connect to standby db?

can any one help me regarding this.
