R04572T2 - ACH BIP dynamic message text date format

I have followed doc ID 1103153.1 to set up dynamic subject/body on e-mail messages for bursting/e-mailing R04572T2 output (see attachment).  Accounts Payable would like the date in the body of the e-mail to read "12-19-2013" or "12/19/2013" instead of "2013-12-19".  Based on previous advice, I've tried to create a variable to transform the date (and then would attach that XPath to the RD), but I'm having no luck in getting it to output in the XML data so I can get the XPath for it. 

Has anyone else had this requirement to format the date that generates in the XML differently?  Thanks for any help.
