index compression in 11gR2

How index compression works in oracle 11gR2. We have 40gb table having 5 indexes on this . We compressed this table after compression
table size reduced to 9.5 gb. 
But the size of indexes not reduced much. One index size become 20gb after compression.
Why this happened . There are lot of articals  on table compression , but not found much on index compression. Please explicate
