ASCP manufacturing Plan and Distribution Plan

Hi All,
I would like to know how planning for distribution organization(s) use to be done in ASCP when distribution plan feature was not available which is currently available in R12?

How new distribution planning is adding more value than earlier methods, is it in trasportation planning, fair share allocation, target values , circular sourcing?

I would like to know why to chose distrubtion planning using Distribution plan over other plan types?

Please let me know.
