$ORACLE_BASE is NULL

For all of the databases on the server, $ORACLE_BASE comes up as NULL. The OS is AIX and most databases are 10.2.0.4

I know I can set it manually, but it won't persist between sessions. I assume I should make the change in the .profile but not sure which one. Can anyone help?
