Doing Web services call using Javascript

 Hi All,I am well aware of how to use Java to do webservices call.
I wanted to know how can i perform the same operation using Javascript. Does anyone has the sample code that explain doing Webservices call through Javascripts, Ajax...etc.??

IF anyone can share the simple code that inserts a record using Javascript(FOr instance there is a webapplet on account page which has some input fields, when the user clicks on the Submit buttonn a new record is created in some object like in Custom Object 7).
