oracle process memory usage

 Hi All, 
does oracle processes are bound to use memory only within the alloted SGA or memory target?..i can see sometimes some of the processes(even background processes like mmon,pmon) consumes more than what is alloted as sga..can someone explain from where it is deriving the memory..the memory usage is identified using TOP command...Please explain
