Error occurred while initializing the data source

I had an issue, where HFM was unable to open any applications, the browser became unresponsive.  This message was present on both HFM servers.  I've googled, and searched Oracle KB with no luck.  Has anyone seen this before, and can provide some granularity on it's impact and potential causes?  The solution was to kill all HFM processes and reboot the servers, including an IISRESET.  The ASP.net State service had been disabled also.
