Shipping Item A but returning Item B (how can we link the 2 instances?)

We have a business scenario where we need to maintain separate items for the same item i.e. Item A will have an alias Item B.

We ship Item A to the customer and it created an instance and associates the warranty. But when the item is returned for repair - the customer ships the Alias Item B (when in fact it's still Item A physically but not from an oracle point of view).

So when the Item B is returned, it has no associate warranty etc, how can we somehow link the 2 instances for Item A and B? Any thoughts?
