Changing UDC length need also change DD ?

 Hi, Good Morning..
Wondering if multiple DD have been referenced by UDC Eg, 42-RC...
If i changed the 42-RC from length = 3 to 5, do i need to change those DD 's length those are referenced by this UDC Eg, dd RCD "reason code" in DD 

pls advice...

another doubt is the UDC length change is based on business requirement or bugfix requirement or system requirement...? Is it normally dealt with application developer ?
