want to email applicants when vacancy closes

We want to use AME and workflow to automatically email all applicants when a vacancy close.  Proposed method is to update status on each applicant
and then send the email once the status is set - is there an easier way? Can we generate messages to all applicants once the status of the vacancy changes to closed?
