How do i change UDC code length ?

Hi, Oracle document stated that we can't change standard UDC code length regardless of the system has gone in live or not..But we can change custom UDC Eg 55can someone guide on how do change the length in UDC ?  I noticed only 1 way that i can change the length is by removing exising udc code and then readd back the same code but with different length,,,

pls advice...
