Restrict Product visibility

Hi,
I would like to restrict the list of products that are available to a user. Within the company we have a long list of products, however depending on the user's business unit only a small subset of these products are relevant. How can I restrict the visibility and prevent users from adding products to an opportunity that are not allowed? I cannot assign the products to books, is there any other way?
