Unable to allocate new log / REDO

Each night between 00:00 and 03:00 our alert log contains the following entries "Thread 1 cannot allocate new log" and "Private strand flush not complete".

During this time period archive log switches are occuring every 8/10 minutes which is more than the recommended 4 per hour.

We were experiencing a similar level of log switching during the normal day at one time, but I have increased the redo log groups size from 4GB to 10GB and now our logs switch approx. every 50 minutes during the day.
