Networking : Do I need a private network for test environment

Hi, 
Oracle 11gR2, Oracle Linux 6 or Ubuntu with KVM .. not decided yet. 

I am setting up a test RAC environment in a VM environment.  Clusterware requires the private and public network definitions. 
Does Oracle Clusterware require a true private network or can it be setup just like the public but labeled private ? 
What do you suggest for setting up the networking in a virtual environment ?
