Database keeps freezing when running backups

I have a oracle 8i database on a oracle solaris 9 server. (old I know)

I have a crontab that is running a .sh file that is backing up 2 owners but for some reason that backup keeps freezing and not completing the backups. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't.

I tried shuttng down and restarting, cleared the semophones, and  a few other things. It does it randomly.

Please Help!!!
