WLS 12c Installation question

I wanted to know what role inventory.xml plays in the future upgrades and patches of a 12c weblogic installation (12.1.2). Also whether OEM does depend on it iwhen performing upgrades and patches.

Given the inventory.xml, is it posible to run more then one version of weblogic on the same server and how?

The last question, is it acceptable to install weblogic on a build server and use that as a golden copy to push it to other servers on the same directory structure?

(I have allready done that with no issues but I want to make sure I do not miss anything)
