Register an xls format Excel Template in BI Publisher for R12.1.3

I've followed Oracle's suggestions in http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21764_01/bi.1111/e13881/T527073T571887.htm#T571925 and successfully created a very basic xls format Excel Template. I successfully previewed it with my XML data. My EBS application is R12.1.3. I am not sure how to register this template and haven't been able to find much documentation for Excel Templates.

My users have a need to view this data in Excel. I've tried using an rtf template with Excel output but Excel doesn't recognize the output when it's open or saved to disk. I think the output is XHTML.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a few reports I need to create templates for.
