Standard cost rollup of multiple recipe

How does the standard cost rollup link the recipes tgether? 

For example, I run the rollup for item A (recipe A).  item A's ingredient is item B (receipe item B's ingredient is item C (recipe C). 

How does it know to rollup the cost item C, pass its cost on to item B, rollup the cost of item B, pass it cost on to item A and then rollup its cost and stop?
