BI Publisher email communication failure

We are on E1 9.0, tools release 8.98.4.2 and are trying to test something using the embedded BI Publisher. We currently print checks and eft remittances and want to email the remittances. To try to test out how email works in this embedded BIP, we set up email for one of our documents in the Burst/Delivery screen in the BIP repository. When we print the document ( actually its the Write option in payment groups to generate the check/eft remittance), it tries to email but we see a Communications Failure in the View Delivery screen.
