Intracompany Balancing rules

We have a single ledger with a six segment COA.  Segment 6 is the Intercompany segment.  Segment 1 is the balancing segment.   We have a single legal entity for the ledger.   We have not assigned balancing segment values to either the ledger or the legal entity.  We have defined one intracompany balancing rule (no legal entity).   The question is:  If we have a legal entity, are we required to assign all balancing segment values to either the ledger or the legal entity or can we proceed without assigning balancing segment values to either and still have intracompany balancing rules work correctly
