Can receipt date default to the earliest open period

We have an issue with receipts being entered for the prior period but being dated in the next period.  Our Receipt Date defaults to the current system date, can this be changed to the earliest open period?  Currently our users forget to change the receipt date causing the cost to go into the wrong period.
