Why do we get ORA 19657: cannot inspect current datafile during RMAN cataloging

Hi,

I read metalink (Doc ID 49353.1) and it says that no action is needed for ORA 19657 because the file is already a part of the mounted database. I am taking a  backup of the Oracle database, including datafiles, control files, redo logs and archive logs.  When I mount the copy to another host and start the database in mount mode, the datafiles will always be a part of the mounted database. Does this mean, I can never catalog a datafile with a remote RMAN catalog? Why am i always getting ORA 19657? There are rare occasions when I can see successful cataloging of datafiles.
