deleting data file that has been offline for extended time

Oracle Linux 5.6 - 64bit

I have just returned to work after being out for surgery for 6 weeks.  In my absence a real mess was created.  A tablespace filled up.  My backfill added a file to the TS, but immediately realized it was created on the file system and not in ASM. No big deal in itself, but he panicked and immediately put the file offline and created another file under ASM.  Then they tried to drop the data file, but got a message that it need to be online and recovered first, and by this time the necessasry archivelog was no longer available.
