Report - Based on Opportunity Close Date

Hi,

Need to build a report based on Opportunity's Close Date however currently client is using Close Date field as an expected Close Date, so that doesn't gives us the clear picture as that may have bypassed etc.. For example, if we need a report on how many opportunities got closed in last 6 months then how to pull this kind of report from the system?

Appreciate prompt help please.
