dynamic subject and body for email delivery

i've read Doc 1103153.1 and tried to setup one of my report definition to take a data item and change the subject and the message line.  the email delivery failed.  however, if i substitute my data item with one of JDE data item (399Q), i get the email.

what am i doing wrong?  is there a way to find out what's happening?
