Conditional Format - Close Date on Opportunities

I am using the standard out of the box Close Date field for an Opportunity in a Report.  I want to Conditionally format the DAte to be Red or have the field highlighted when the Close Date is < Today().  How can I do this?  The simple conditional formatting doesn't appear to be rebust enough to handle an evaluation against a variable like Today().   Appreciate the advice and ideas.
