OK, time has passed and things improved, great.

Nowadays it's possible to split a root pool "but the pool that is split off is not bootable until you perform some additional steps" as mentioned at Creating a New Pool By Splitting a Mirrored ZFS Storage Pool.

So, what are these additional steps?
