Importance of Job in Position Hierarchy

We are on 11510 and are using Core Purchasing module and using Position Hierarchy. Wanted to know what is the purpose of 'JOB" in a position hierarchy as the hierarchy is driven by 'Position' only.

Is there anyway we can de-link a job to the Position
