How to recover database to an old timestamp

Hello experts,

I have a question regarding one rman scenario.Suppose I have some good backup(level 0 + archivelogs+controlfile&spfile) taken in tape.In tape side this backup is kept for 1 year. After 6 months I have to create a database with that backup and do some testing.Controlfile definitely will not contain that history but catalog will.If I don't use catalog then how do I identify that backupset. One senior dba in our team claimed that we can recover until that time even if there is no entry in catalog.

Appreciate any expert suggestion on that.
