Attachment object - Fields can't be used in workflow/validation

Hi,

I've a requirement where a pop-up message should be displayed for a Sales Executive if an Opportunity is moved to 'Closed/Won' asking to upload the 'Order' quote. Here, I though we can use 'Attachment' object for this Order quote upload (i.e. Soft Copy upload) purpose which is already added in Opportunity's related information layout. And an email alert should be triggered to his manager to validate the respective Opportunity's closure with Order quote being uploaded. However I'm NOT able to view/use Attachment's fields to apply any validation/workflows.

Can you please point me to correct direction here please?
