Can you install Grid Infrastructure without having ASM ?

Hi,

If you are installing 11gR2 Grid Infrastructure ( for either a Standalone or a Clustered environment ), is ASM always installed regardless of your intention to use it or not ?

During the GI Install you can decide if you are going to use ASM for storing GI Components ( eg the OCR, Voting Disk etc – if installing into a clustered environment ) or you can choose to use non ASM storage.

I appreciate you could decide to use non ASM storage for GI but then decide to use ASM storage for Client Databases.

However if you have decided to use non ASM storage for both GI and the Client databases, then it seems wasteful for GI to install ASM in the first place.
