Can a Benefit Group be deleted?

We've been on JDE payroll for 13 - 14 years. Over the years, some benefit groups have come and gone. If I remove the obsolete benefit group(s) from all (terminated) employees, can I delete the group? The DBAs associated with the group would not be deleted. But how much is the Benefit Group itself noted in history tables?
