Hiding picklist values from users

We have certain picklist values that are used for WF only. Specifically in the TYPE for Activities. We have a problem with users selecting these values therefore skewing our results. Is there a way to hide certain values from users so that it does not appear as a pick list value?

I have played around in out staging area and placed some of these values and <DISABLED> and they do not appear in the picklist AND out WF still fire accordingly. I just don't know if there is a better way or if this will cause deeper issues.
