Purpose of Name Control field

Hi,

We are using R12, but this field was also in 11i.

In R12, the Name Control field is found by clicking the Tax and Reporting link in Suppliers.

We are planning to discontinue entering a four character supplier code in this field as I don't think it's really used for anything. I know that the code will no longer appear in the 1099 Electronic Media file sent to the IRS, however we have sent files previously with missing codes and yet this does not cause any problems with the IRS.

Does anyone know of any reason that we should continue entering the first four letters of the supplier's last name into the
